Pallets are really the perfect material for a DIY bed. They are usually free to acquire and just need a little bit of paint and some basic hardware to affix them together.
What’s really fun about using pallets for a bed is that you get some nice open spaces beneath the bed that you can light up with LED light ropes. You could also create some sort of drawer system too for extra storage if you’d rather go that route.
I found a really great guide for making a pallet bed over at the Shade and Shadow blog. Check it out here…

I have seen a lot of these sofas floating around the world wide web lately on pinterest and facebook so I started digging around to see if I could find a good DIY tutorial. I actually could not find any DIY project tutorials on specifically how to do a patchwork re-upholstery of a sofa! If you find one, please send me the link.
What I discovered though is that these couches are actually being sold for thousands of dollars at several high end boutique stores. So, here’s the work around… you just need to understand the basics of how to re-upholster furniture in general. Then with some basic sewing skills you can patchwork together your fabric first, then begin the re-upholster process.
Here’s some great resources to help you understand the re-upholster process. First, take a look here and here. Good guides for beginners.
I also found this guide on doing a patchwork chair which you can use as a model for a larger project like a sofa.
I also found some great videos at the Modern Homemakers blog. Here’s the first video in her series below… (Here’s the link to parts 2-6 as well)

I would totally love to have an outdoor shower to use during the summer months. I don’t want to use straight hose water though. Even in the middle of summer the water from the hose is just too cold to hook straight into a shower head.
You just have to find a way to heat the water up a bit before it hits the shower head. I think the easiest way would be to run the water through a couple hundred feet of black hose up on the roof. The only issue then would be the length of your “hot” shower… it would be directly related to the length of your hose capturing heat.
After some research I found a really great resource with 10 different ideas on how to heat up water for an outdoor shower. There’s everything from simply hanging a black bag of water all the way to a super elaborate batch water heating system.

I think having backyard chickens and a coop is a great idea for anyone with a small yard. We live in a pretty standard sized sub division and everyone has a fenced in back yard. I think it would be pretty easy to fortify our fence so that chickens could not get out.
I think in town here, they even recently had a tour of homes just for backyard chicken enthusiasts. I am not sure what the laws are either. I wonder if you need a special permit for chickens?
I found this really great site where everyone shares their chicken coop projects and plans. There’s hundreds of ideas here! If you are thinking of building a coop – you have to check out this link…

How To Add Glass Marbles To Your Fence

how to add glass marbles to a fence
I saw this idea on pinterest several times and thought I’d share it with you guys in case you haven’t seen it yet. It’s an easy way to add some fun and whimsy to your backyard.
Basically, you just need to drill holes in your fence and cram the marbles in. Make sure you only do this on fencing where you own the land on both sides LOL. Your neighbors may wonder what the heck is going on if you start drilling little holes in your fence looking on to their property.
You can get creative too. Try writing a word with the marbles or doing a fun pattern like a star or a heart.
There are a few tips you should know too. Head over to the C.R.A.F.T blog for a great post on how to marble your fence. Jamie has lots of great projects and tips throughout her blog as well so don’t forget to browse around!
